First, let me reminisce of days gone past and the local music scene in San Francisco.
There seemed to be a lot more venues spread across town. The Upper Haight wasn't the strip mall it has become today since there were a few venues including the amazing I-Beam. The Stone and On Broadway brought in great acts. During the Tom Guido days at The Purple Onion there was always a spectacle, whether with the bands or Guido himself.
Touring bands had it easier in years past. I remember being too yo... Continue reading ...
Somali pirates don't scare easily.
Last month, they hijacked a Ukrainian merchant vessel loaded with tanks, heavy weapons and ammunition, and still haven't relinquished control of the freighter to the American and Russian navy ships that have besieged it for weeks off the Somali coast.
Last week, they tried to snatch an Indian merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden only to be thwarted by the Indian navy, which had dispatched assets to the region to cope with the pirates' rising threat.

Mystique about alien spaceships and little green men at Area 51 took a back seat Thursday to the real men who worked there for the CIA and the spy planes they flew during the Cold War.
In fact, a question about a link between the secret installation 90 miles north of Las Vegas and speculation about flying saucer debris and dead aliens from a 1947 crash site near Roswell, N.M., was glossed over as fiction during a panel discussion at the Atomic Testing Museum.
The panel of former Area 51 ... Continue reading ...

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman kept the idea for a red-light district for downtown Vegas alive. At his news conference yesterday the mayor told reporters: "I’ve met with folks from that industry who make a very compelling argument that it could generate $200 million a year in tax dollars, and that would buy a lot of textbooks, pay for a lot of teachers.” Interestingly, the prostitutes legal and illegal do not seem very excited by the potential of plying their trade in Vegas, at least, wi...

Last spring, President Obama showed us the limits of Change. Sure, he banned the harsh interrogation practices condoned by his predecessor, and he will most likely close the prison in Guantánamo. But when he fought a lawsuit against the warrantless wiretaps that the Bush administration began, Obama was essentially saying he would keep relying on the notion of "state secrets." And you know what? That's OK.
Abruptly pulling the plug on US intelligence operations, even if they may eventu... Continue reading ...

The Hernando County seat Brooksville, FL was the site for the Brooksville Police Department's most recent undercover prostitution sting. This operation, according to Kyle Martin from the Hernando Today, took in 32 arrests.
Arrests for Prostitution, are often the target of Motions to Dismiss or Motions to Suppress Evidence due to the Entrapment issues that arise in these scenarios. Although Entrapment defenses arise in other cases--most notably drug crimes, sex crimes and theft cases--countle... Continue reading ...

DEARBORN, Mich. – There's a swirl of activity in a spacious, modern kitchen as final meal preparations are made.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – News photos of President Barack Obama bowing to Japan's emperor have incensed critics here, who said the US leader should stand tall when representing America overseas.
Obama on Monday was in China, having wrapped up the Japan leg of his Asia trip two days earlier. But Washington's punditocracy was still weighing whether or not the US president had disgraced his country two days earlier by having taken a deep bow at the waist while meeting Japan's Emperor Akihito.

Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti told the Pompano BeachCity Commission at a recent meeting that he disagreed with a study that stated the city could save millions if it dropped the Broward Sheriff's Office and instituted its own police department.
"We think it's flawed and inconsistent," Lamberti said.
Facing a projected budget shortfall and increased concerns among residents, Pompano hired Willdan Homeland Solutions for $80,000 to study its police services.
